There are songs you write for others and there are songs you write for yourself. "Beautiful, Sleeping Giant" is of the latter. However, it was initially prompted by a friend wanting me to write a song about how great New York is. My relationship with the city that allegedly never sleeps is complicated. It sustains me and it scares me, all the time. When I feel scared, I want my mom to make it all better. And so that's where the maternal and fairy tale imagery came from.
I wrote this on my mom's acoustic guitar a few months after she passed away. Ben Roseberry's performance is a living tribute to this beautiful person who, while very human, made the giants look a little more conquerable. In a few years, I hope I can do the same.
A word from Tony Award-winning Producer Ken Davenport…
If you have a script you're struggling to finish, or need help fine-tuning a project you've been working on, or even if you have an idea that you haven't been able to get out of your head and onto paper . . . our Writer's Group is a safe place for you to get the feedback and support you need.
Our next Writer's Group, which will be held on the 2nd Monday of every month from 6-9pm starting in April, meets one evening per month to go over new developments with your script, read excerpts and get feedback from the group as well as a member of my team.
Our new group starting in April will be lead by Joel B. New. Joel is a composer, lyricist, bookwriter, producer, educator, and performer who is the proud recipient of the American Theatre Wing’s Jonathan Larson Grant and MAC's John Wallowitch Award for his songwriting. Joel’s work has been seen and developed at Ars Nova, New York Theatre Barn, Prospect Theater Company, Musical Theatre Factory, and the New York Musical Festival.
Catering to writers at all stages who are looking for support, feedback and a place to explore, our Writer’s Group is a small ensemble of playwrights looking to forge new connections and make meaningful progress on their projects.
