NEW is a celebrated artist whose work has garnered the prestigious Jonathan Larson Grant from the American Theatre Wing and MAC's John Wallowitch Award for his exceptional songwriting. Known for his “hilarious” and “impossible not to enjoy” creations with a “refreshing sense of originality” (BroadwayWorld.com), Joel’s voice stands out in the modern musical theatre landscape.

Joel’s acclaimed projects include Tempting Mr. Lincoln, Undertaking Christmas, Monkey Trouble Unleashed!, and R.E.D. Hat Fight Club. His music and musicals have been seen and developed at premier organizations such as Ars Nova, New York Theatre Barn, Prospect Musicals, Musical Theatre Factory, Broadway au Carré in Paris, and the New York Musical Festival. His songs have captivated audiences at renowned cabaret and concert venues, including Green Room 42, 54 Below, The Duplex, Lincoln Center, Stonewall Inn, Don’t Tell Mama, Laurie Beechman Theatre, and Ars Nova.

In addition to his creative endeavors, Joel is the creator and host of Something New, an award-nominated podcast named one of BroadwayWorld.com’s Top 20 Podcasts for Theatre Fans. He is also the Founder of Benjwelo Theatricals, Craft The Draft, Connectivus, the C-LAB Writers Group, and Broadway Sip & Sing, initiatives that have fostered innovation, mentorship, and community within the performing arts. A dual-degree holder, Joel earned an MFA in Musical Theatre Writing from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and a BM in Musical Theatre Performance from Oklahoma City University’s Bass School of Music. His expertise bridges artistry and pedagogy, with a commitment to uplifting the next generation of creators.

Joel’s first solo EP, Cabot Cove—a dazzling collection of “theatre pop” songs inspired by the beloved TV series Murder, She Wrote—is available on Broadway Records.

Joel currently resides in Astoria, NY, with his husband, their 8-year-old son, and their dog.
